Have there been any recent advances in the treatment of tinnitus, in the past decade; how do you deal .. tips?

December 28, 2010 - 2:34 pm 1 Comment

me: since 11/92; 24/7 ! ~ :*(

There are many treatments for tinnitus that have been claimed, with varying degrees of statistical reliability:

Objective tinnitus:
Gamma knife radiosurgery (glomus jugulare)[35]
Shielding of cochlea by teflon implant[36]
Botulinum toxin (palatal tremor)[37]
Propranolol and clonazepam (arterial anatomic variation)[38]
Clearing ear canal (in the case of earwax plug)[39]
Using a Neurostimulator [40]
Subjective tinnitus:
Drugs and nutrients
Lidocaine, injection into the inner ear found to suppress the tinnitus for 20 minutes, according to a Swedish study.[41]
Benzodiazepines (lorazepam, clonazepam) in small doses
Tricyclics (amitriptyline, nortriptyline) in small doses [42]
Avoidance of caffeine, nicotine, salt[43][44][45]
The consumption of alcohol has been found to both increase and decrease the severity of tinnitus. Therefore, alcohol’s effect on the severity of tinnitus is dependent on the causes of the individual’s affliction and cannot be considered a treatment.[45][46]
Zinc supplementation (where serum zinc deficiency is present)[47][48][49]
Acamprosate[50]
Etidronate or sodium fluoride (otosclerosis)[51]
Lignocaine or anticonvulsants (usually in patients responsive to white noise masking)[52]
Carbamazepine[53]
Melatonin (especially for those with sleep disturbance)[54]
Sertraline[55]
Vitamin combinations (Lipoflavonoid)[56]
Electrical stimulation
Transcranial magnetic stimulation or transcranial direct current stimulation[57][58]
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation[59]
Direct stimulation of auditory cortex by implanted electrodes[60]
Berthold Langguth, German neurologist would apply an electric or magnetic current for stimulation over the head of the patient to reduce ringing sound. Dirk De Ridder, Belgian neurosurgeon implanted electrodes to the brain of sufferers to normalise overactive neurons. Cambridge scientists also found that lidocaine, an anaesthetic reduces the sound in 2/3 of patients for 5 minutes, but it needs another drug to suppress its dangerous effects.[61]
Surgery
Repair of perilymph fistula[62]
External sound
Low-pitched sound treatment has shown some positive, encouraging results.(UC, Irvine press release)
Tinnitus masker (white noise, or better ’shaped’ or filtered noise[63]
Tinnitus retraining therapy[64][65]
Auditive stimulation therapy (music therapy)[66]
Compensation for lost frequencies by use of a hearing aid.[67]
Ultrasonic bone-conduction external acoustic stimulation[68][69]
Avoidance of outside noise (exogenous tinnitus)[70]
Psychological
Cognitive behavioral therapy[71]

Xanax is very popular and is prescribed often for tinnitus. However, the ATA report on medications that cause tinnitus lists Xanax as causing it in 6.6% of cases.

Herbal remedies can be used to support all body systems involved in helping the ear to perform its tasks of clear hearing and balance, as well as the circulatory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.
Some of the most common herbs used are
• Ginkgo Biloba is excellent for a number of cerebral and circulatory disorders. It is probably the most widely-used herb for tinnitus and many sufferers swear by this natural ingredient.
• Rosemary dilates and strengthens blood vessels and is an excellent circulation tonic. Rosemary is particularly useful for tinnitus that is caused or worsened by high blood pressure and other circulatory conditions.
• Avena Sativa is effective in reducing high cholesterol levels which can contribute to circulatory problems which cause tinnitus.
• Wild Hyssop s also useful in reducing pain and inflammation.
• Salicylic Ac. (30C) is indicated for tinnitus with loud roaring or ringing sounds, which may be accompanied by deafness or vertigo. This remedy is particularly useful in people whose symptoms began with a bout of flu, Meniere’s disease or long-term use of aspirin.

Hope all this helps

Good Luck!

Would you take advice about medical problems from anyone other than a doctor?

December 28, 2010 - 2:34 pm 11 Comments

I’ve noticed ppl ask specific advice for medical issues when they haven’t consulted a doctor. I find this peculiar. I’m not talking about what to do for symptoms. Sometimes, ppl seem to want a diagnosis. Would you take this advice knowing that ppl may not be educated enough to answer? Why?

It would depend on the problem I had wrong, how serious it was if I would post it here or not. Sometimes people just want reassurance to find what others think from people that went through something similiar they want to mentally feel better I think. I’m an Ask-The-Expert on lymphedema and am very familiar with circulatory problems and also a disabled due to cancer, pharmacy asst so I can answer alot of questions based on my experience tho I’m not a doctor, I always tell people to go to the dr if it’s something that seems like they need medical attention.

I think alot of people are scared of going to the dr and they just want to know what might be wrong before they go, like a reassurance thing. Like the woman who asked if a breast lump could be cancer, she’s scared she found it and wants to hear of things it could be other than cancer but the bottom line is she needs to see the doctor to be sure but I think by posting her question she feels better because some will say it’s a cyst, some hormonal, some benign tumor, and then others breast cancer so she finds out some things it could be to ease her mind before she goes.

the bottom line is tho, we don’t know the people who answer, but the person asking is taking a risk if they rely just on answers and don’t go to the doctor.

Natural Supplements to lower mens libido?

December 28, 2010 - 2:33 pm 2 Comments

I was wondering what natural supplements can lower a man’s sex drive.
Please serious answers only, no "why would you want to do that" answers please.

I heard maybe chasteberry, but then I read it was only an old wives tale.

Anyone know, it would help alot thanks.

chasteberry does. also known as vitex.
it was used by monks centuries ago to lower their sex drive to stay celibate.
i would trust the monks, any herb that has been used for thousands of years probably works.

How to talk to doctor and family about hemorrhoids?

December 28, 2010 - 2:33 pm 4 Comments

So I think I may have a hemorrhoid. It’s not a bump, but it’s very tender and is on my anus. I heard that hemorrhoids can be under your skin too…? The thing is, I’m not very good at talking about [embarrassing] health matters with people, especially my doctor. I want to tell my family too, what do I say??? Also, I want to avoid spending money on treatments if I can help it. If I can avoid it, I would like to get a diagnosis here and learn about some home remedies [if it is a hemorrhoid.] Thanks!

The hems will heal up if the cause is erradicated. They pop out of the inside of the body when straining and pushing impacted matter against the sphincter muscle of the anus.
If your BM’s are dry and impacted at the rectum use glycerin suppositories to help lubricate the blockage out. Then your bowels can pass that point freely. To prevent impaction again obey the call of nature, give yourself time in the morning instead of rushing out the door without your BM. And eat fruit every day, roughage such as bran and raw vegetables. Drink more fluids because when we lose fluid and do not drink enough to replace it, the body becomes dehydrated and pulls moisture from tissues and the colon to operate systems.

Is this a hemorrhoid? Cures?

December 28, 2010 - 2:33 pm 3 Comments

A bump on with rectum with bleeding, swelling, and pain? Can the swelling make it really hard to "go"? Are there any cure creams or anything that can be ordered online? Can you completely cure hemorrhoids? I’ve read both that you can and you can’t. I’m actually snowed in. In the middle of a huge blizzard…so yeah theres no doc for a few days. Also what a home remedy to soften stool?

yes it sounds like hemorrhoids. hemorrhoids can go away and sometimes they can come back. you can go to the doctor to get them removed but if you don’t want to do that you can get prep h or any other hem. cream. i guess you can order it online but im not for sure. and as for stool softeners, you can use prunes ( but they will make you have to go like a laxative would), drink lots of water and get plenty of fiber.

do cultured or lab grown gemstones have the same healing properties as natural stones?

December 28, 2010 - 2:33 pm 5 Comments

since it has the same chemical properties as the natural ones, i thought that it would also have the same effect. and how would i know the difference?

Crystals have no healing powers, they’re just f’ing rocks.

They do have annoying powers however when your mom puts them all over the place because they are pretty and you step on one…

Pain from my sciatica is killing me. Can’t walk at all. Surgery is too risky. Where can I find herbal cure?

December 28, 2010 - 2:33 pm 4 Comments

Had an epidural injection once last month. Was told by Dr not to have it again. Medications, especially pain killers have side effects. Advised to go for herbal remedies/treatment and physiotheraphy.

The Sciatic nerve is a large one the comes out of the spinal area. When this nerve acts up, there’s no stopping it, and, it becomes more irritated with time.
Why the doctor told you "not to get any more injections" is not known.
If done right at a pain clinics, it should bring almost instant relief for months sometimes. The Cortisone steroids both heals and sooths the nerve. I had many of this over the last fourteen years.

Pain killers, like Darvocet, Vicodin, Percocet, any medication has side effects, But, so do herbal remedies and, in fact, herbal remedies have more due to the FDA does not recognize these treatments and, does not check them or, find out what they contain.
Sometimes these herbal remedies can be devastating. I know of one "Healer" in Cal. that uses these remedies and claims to have cure cancer and, blindness so, I guess it’s your choice, to help yourself, or mess with an unknown product.

What exactly is homeopathy and does it work?

December 28, 2010 - 2:33 pm 8 Comments

If it does work, are all homepath doctors genuine? Do they have to pass any qualification?

Homeopathy is based on two principals, both of which are equally ridiculous in the face of what we now know in science, hell, they were ridiculous 200 years ago, and you can find a massive amount of scientific literature from the time criticizing it.

The first is the Law of Similars – Basically stating that the body will ‘not permit’ two illnesses with the same effects to exist at once, and therefore by inducing a very low level of a second illness with similar effects you can negate the first. This is blatantly not true. You are perfectly capable of having multiple kinds of cancers, different flu and cold viruses, even different bacterial infections – all of which produce similar responses – at the same time.

The second is the law of infinitesimals – stating that the lower in concentration the active substance in a treatment is, the more effective this is. Even when diluted to the point where there is none of the active substance, the water ‘remembers’ the properties.

This one gets more criticism as it runs afoul of nearly every rule we know about how the physical universe works, in just about every science. The whole of biology is based on molecules interacting with one another, yet this claims that no molecules other than water are necessary – extrapolated this means that everything from hormones, to cytokines to oxygen do not have to be present to work, because the water is ‘remembering’ it.

The concept of water chemistry was the subject of a great deal of controversy in the late 80s when a scientist claimed to be able to produce the effect in a placebo controlled setting. Nature published his article with a massive disclaimer, and subsequently had several people investigate his claim – it turned out that it was not blinded or placebo controlled at all, and that his idea of such was to not verbally tell the person receiving the treatment that one was a placebo and the other not – despite preparing the treatment within sight of the patient, and having the containers labelled. When the trial was placebo controlled, the perceived effect vanished immediately. This has been the case with MANY other homeopathy trials – basically the people running them have an extremely poor grasp of basic science, and no grasp at all of experimental design, and spew out mountains of badly designed, uncontrolled junk that is examined and tossed out on its face in light of errors that are frequently so large that a 1st year undergraduate wouldn’t make them.

From the concept of physical chemistry (basically, using the laws of thermodynamics to describe chemical action) the second ‘law’ amounts to creating energy to provoke a cellular response – energy that in biology comes from the binding of a ligand molecule to a receptor or other enzyme. The First Law of Thermodynamics is kind of important.

So basically it does not work. And while some may genuinely believe it to, many others continue to ignore the science and sell useless treatments. There are no qualifications of any sort, legal or otherwise. You can essentially open a lemonade stand and sell homeopathic lemonade.

Has anyone tried any natural cures for Uterine Fibroids? & Did it really work?

December 28, 2010 - 2:33 pm 4 Comments

I am concerned that I may have uterine fibroids. My period has changed signifcantly from my norm of 3 days of light bleeding to 1 day of spotting, 2 days of very heavy bleeding (leaking through super plus tampon ever 2 hours), 2 days of regular bleeding and another 2 days of spotting for a total of 7 days now. My period has also changed from every 28 days to every 26 days. Each month my period has gotten longer and heavier. My mother had fibroid tumors and had to have a hysterectomy. It is my understanding fibroids are hereditary. I would like to know about natural obtainable cures that actually work.

i suffer from uterine fibroids, as did my mother, older sister, and 4 of my 1st cousins. one natural cure that i saw and only used once was Cheyenne pepper. one teaspoon at nite in a full glass of water. it is a very hot nasty taste. i battled fibroids for maybe 10 yrs. before i ended up in the er with hemorrhage. i didn’t have a hysterectomy. i had a myomectomy. they cut the fibroid off the outside of my uterus. i have a cut from my naval down, i was in the hospital for 3 days and out of work for 6 wks. the 1st 2 periods were bad and then the were great, but that only can last 6 yrs, its been 8 for me, I’m now starting to have problems again. I’m 48 now and if i have to be cut again i will just have the hysterectomy. a co-worker had a myomectomy, and she went on to have 2 full-term healthy babies. i considered my age at the time. you can get a book of home remedies at a major book store, try some of what you may find in them. good luck! in short do what’s best for you and your lifestyle. you have to live with the results.
