Book list! (And medical school advice)

November 15, 2011 - 3:13 am 25 Comments

This is an intro to great books on medicine. If you want to read something fun, informative about medicine, I’ve put together a short list of recommended books. But also, for those who are applying to medical school, this summer reading list should be a fun place to start — and also should help you with your medical school essay and interview. Recommended by Youtuber: Singul4r1ty The house of god” by Samuel Shem ____________________________________________ These are some further books recommended by Youtuber Jason Pitcher. He wrote: “Planning a Life in Medicine” by The Princeton Review. This book is one of the basics that discuss the steps towards making it into medical school and fully details the areas one should focus on to prepare for such a venture. “Med School Confidential” by Robert H. Miller & Daniel M. Bissell,MD This book, too, details and outlines the steps for an undergraduate to take to make it into medical school and succeed as a medical student. “The Intern Blues” by Robert Marion, MD This particular piece details three interns (post-med school) and the trials and tribulations they face in the pediatric wards as they work towards surviving their first year as doctors. “Emergency Doctor” by Edward Ziegler. A work that describes life and experiences as an emergency physician. “Becoming a Doctor” Melvin Konner, MD This is probably one of my favorites as it shows the reader the journey to becoming a doctor as a 33 year old man who already had created a life

Mother and Baby ?Common medical advice for babies

October 1, 2011 - 12:02 am No Comments

A lot of mothers especially the new moms are very critical when taking care of their baby. One of the most common questions that are being asked is how to properly feed the baby and when is the right time to feed him or her. Well, there is no exact answer to that but to feed the baby whenever he or she is hungry. So how would parents know when the baby gets hungry? Babies should be fed every two hours or as needed. The baby will show if he or she is still hungry because one he or she was able to finish his milk, he will be asking for more by means of crying. Mother and baby should have direct contact with each other and should have enough time to spend together. It is best for the baby to be taken care of the mother in order to be well cherished and in order for the baby to feel that he or she was being loved by the and cared for.

The best medical advice that is being given to almost every mother is to breastfeed their babies. There is no greater substitute for breast milk and it is also important to know the proper method of breastfeeding the baby. However, this feeding position is not really necessary because most of the time, it all depends on the mother and to the baby. When feeding the baby, mothers should not worry if the baby is not having a lot of milk at a certain time because there are some babies who naturally want to be nursed irregularly at first. The feeding could be divided in different times such as every half an hour, every hour and there are also some babies who only want to be fed around five times a day.

In the hospital once the mother gained consciousness, she will be given a nurse advice as to how to feed the baby and other things that a mother should know in feeding the baby. Mothers should listen to those advices in order for her to magnify her responsibilities. After a month or so, the baby’s stomach will build up and start growing –that will be the time that the baby will begin to drink a lot of milk and would want to be nursed more often. Proper nutrition should be given to the mother and baby because since mothers are breastfeeding, they should have the right kind of nutrition in order for her to provide the baby the kind of nourishment that the baby’s body needs.

Being a mother is a great and wonderful responsibility. So, every mom should think of ways of how she could give as much nutrition as needed by the baby. Taking good care of the baby is the responsibility of the parents and babies also have the right to be well taken care of as well as be properly nourished. Mothers should try their best to provide breast milk because this is the best source of nutrition for the baby especially for the new born babies.

Online Resources and Medical Advice

August 16, 2011 - 8:45 pm No Comments

The internet is an extensive library of information, and today’s internet users take full advantage of its wealth of resources.  Beyond serving as entertainment and a means of communication, online educational resources have proven useful for students and people wishing to expand their education.

This information is also coming to be regarded as a top source of medical knowledge and advice.  Sites like WebMD and The Mayo Clinic allow users to research medical conditions, discover what their symptoms mean, and learn more about the human body from their computers.  Users can also research different drugs and their side effects.  What sets this information apart from that found in a library or by consulting with a physician is its accessibility: people are afforded information they would not have had within easy reach before.

Some online services, like Activ Doctors Online, are offering online medical advice through an actual physician looking over their file – offering today’s medically interested internet user the opportunity to gain insight into their condition and learn about medical options with a real physician from home and on the computer.  These online medical services mark a new level of internet adoption and usage in the home.  Whereas some resources may not be fully trusted, communicating with a doctor on an official website makes for a more honest experience.  Additionally, resources on a widely trusted medical website may not be pertinent to every case – there may be special circumstances, or diagnosis and treatment may depend on very small factors.

With an online medical opinion, the patient can have an actual doctor review their records and interpret their case.  This allows the doctor to form an opinion and make recommendations – something that a website cannot do.  The advent of medical information online means a new purpose and a new use for the internet in the American home.

About Activ Doctors Online

Activ Doctors Online aims to provide world-class medical expertise to help their users make more educated decisions about their healthcare. Medical Advice Online For Your Personal Health Can Be Quite Helpful

April 3, 2011 - 11:00 am No Comments

As someone who spent a great many years without personal health insurance, I would often seek medical advice online and found that it was very useful. Like many people, I was very skeptical about getting such advice online at first, because I did not know whether to trust that it was an actual doctor that was giving me the advice.

I learned, however, that there are many places to find legitimate medical advice online, where doctors take the time to answer your questions regarding personal health care and wellness. All you have to do is look for them.

One web site that I like to visit is “medhelp.org”, where you can ask questions about medical conditions or your personal health care related issues and get advice from a real doctor. It has been very useful to me, because I would always have to tell them that I did not have a regular doctor and ask what was the best way to treat something without a prescription drug.

Something that I have seen a lot with medical information online is that whoever is giving it will recommend that you see your regular doctor or physician for a proper diagnosis. When a doctor’s visit costs upwards of 0, however, and you don’t know how much a prescription is going to be, that is not always possible.

Another site that I like to visit for medical information online is “Webmd.com”. This site does not allow you to ask specific questions to doctors, but it does provide the opportunity for self-diagnosis by entering the symptoms you have and the part of the body being affected. It has been a very useful tool for me when I have experienced certain aches and pains.

There are all kinds of sites that allow you to describe the symptoms that you have been having and for how long, and they will provide you with a general diagnosis of what the problem may be. It is not a substitute for a doctor’s visit and I guess technically it would not be considered online medical advice, but it can be helpful in terms of giving you an idea of what you are experiencing.

Even now that I have personal health insurance, I still find myself looking at a lot of these web sites for medical advice online, and have never really been led astray by doing so, or suffered any setbacks on my road to recovery.

I really believe that when it comes to medical advice online for your personal health care, just use your head. If you are able to contact an actual doctor who diagnoses you and suggests something that sounds bizarre in terms of treatment, he is probably not legitimate. I have never experienced anything like that, however, and such web sites can be very useful with regards to getting an idea of what medical problems you may have.

Given the hectic lives we lead today and the innate competitiveness that surrounds us, issues and problems related to health, wellness and relationships are abundant and very common. However, the recipient has the right to decide whether or not he or she wants to reply or get such private messages from you.

Why are people asking for pet medical advice here?

January 26, 2011 - 9:50 am 7 Comments

The first thing to do when you’re pets vomiting/ peeing all over/ puking/ or eatten something bad etc is to CALL THE VET! Quit wasting time!

I know, it’s driving me nuts!! I can understand asking about little things, but when they’re asking for advice and they themselves think their pet might be dying, I seriously want to reach through my computer and choke them. I just answered a question last night where a girl asked "Is she dying or just ill and can be cured?" Then listed some of the symptoms. What difference does it make if she’s dying or has something that’s curable?! Get the poor thing to a vet NOW! Even if the poor animal was dying, the least she could do is get it to a vet to make it more comfortable or end it’s life in a quicker way so the pet didn’t have to suffer a long, painful death. I wanted to scream, I was so upset by the question. It’s just so irritating that there’s so few people left in this world with some common sense. Do people really need to be told when to get their pet to a vet? If you think it’s dying, get it to a vet! Why must people come on here and have twenty people tell them to take it to a vet. Don’t ask, just do it!! The more time they spend surfing the net asking questions, the less chance their pet has at getting a treatment that might possibly cure it. It drives me nuts and I feel so bad for the animals because you can only imagine what kind of pain they must be feeling. Something really needs to change, because I am so sick of those questions. But, as irritating as those questions are, I do at least try to tell the person what I think might be wrong with their pet and I try to be as nice as possible. But still, what good will a correct internet diagnosis do? We can tell people what their pets might have, and we might get it right, but we can’t treat them. Aye, I just want to scream at those people and slap ‘em upside the head…
