Most of us are aware that greed pretty much rules our world. It appears to me that pharmaceutical companies want to keep us sick. Some doctors appear to be co-operating all too well with these companies and are being paid by them to promote their particular brands of medicine and products.

What are natural cures for depression?

February 11, 2011 - 7:51 pm 1 Comment

sometimes i get lonely and feel very depressed. does anyone know of any natural cures? i find myself eating healthy and exercising daily but for some reason i still feel sad. please help. thank you. by the way, i refuse to take any medications. so only natural cures please.

Identify the cause, if possible. Was there a triggering event? If so, it is probably reactive (situational) depression: counselling, psychotherapy, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is indicated. Or, was it a more gradual thing, with no apparent cause? (a nutritional deficiency, hypothyroidism, environmental toxicity, or reactions to some medications, such as Advil etc., becomes more likely as the cause). Antidepressants work quicker than the following; 2 – 6 weeks, but you may have to adjust dosage, or types. St. John’s Wort helps most people; tolerance doesn’t develop, and the few side effects don’t occur often, and even then are normally not severe (neither antidepressants, nor the wort, nor supplements should be relied on as a sole treatment). It doesn’t cause sleeping problems, or weight change, and usually takes at least 2, and generally 4 – 6 weeks to become effective, but can sometimes work quicker than antidepressants. See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10759336?dopt=Abstract A recent, independent German double blind study showed it to be as effective as a commonly prescribed antidepressant, in cases of major depression, with far fewer side effects, and those were generally better tolerated, with a lower rate of discontinuation. Unlike antidepressants, where sexual dysfunction is a common side effect, it is far less of a problem with SJW. A multidimensional approach to treating depression without medication follows. All except for no. (7.) are safe to use with medication, but not SJW, because of interactions, and it’s sensible to check out anything else first, like Ginkgo Biloba, Gotu Kola, or supplements, such as SAMe, 5-htp, or L-phenylalanine, with your doctor.

(1.) Take at least 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or its FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it! In the winter months, if not getting sufficient daily exposure to strong light, see http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/12/16/my-one-hour-vitamin-d-lecture-to-clear-up-all-your-confusion-on-this-vital-nutrient.aspx Go to a doctor and ask for a 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D, blood test. When you get the results, don’t follow the typical “normal” reference range, as these are too low. The OPTIMAL value that you’re looking for is 45-52 ng/ml (115-128 nmol/l)". The company which tests your levels has to be one of those using the correct form of test, and this topic is addressed via the searchbar at Mercola.com – "vitamin D3; testing". Also take a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin; the deficiency in vitamin B9 (folate, or folic acid) that most depressed people have, is known to cause depression. Around 30% – 40% of depressed people have low vitamin B12 levels. (2.) Work up slowly to at least 20 minutes of daily exercise, or 30 – 60 mns, 5 times weekly in daytime, outside. Too much exercise can cause stress; unwanted when dealing with depression. (3.) Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows little time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain).

(4.) Practice a relaxation method, daily, and when needed, such as: (free) http://www.drcoxconsulting.com/managing-stress.html or http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/mindbody/a/Meditation.htm or http://www.wikihow.com/Meditate or Yoga Nidra, (no flexibility required) at http://your-mental-health.8m.com/blank_11.html Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or yoga. Give the EFT a good tryout, to see if it helps you. It is free via the searchbar at http://www.mercola.com "EFT" & "EFT therapists" – Professional is best. There is a version for use in public places, (you could claim to have a headache, as you use the acupressuremassage/tapping on your temples. (5.) Initially, at least, some form of psychotherapy or counselling; later, perhaps either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, (a free E course in it, which may well reduce the time needed in therapy, as should *, & ** is at: http://ecouch.anu.edu.au/welcome ) or Rational Emotive Behavio(u)ral Therapy for up to 6 months. (6.) Maintain a mood chart, and daily activities schedule**. (7.) As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St. John’s wort, (get a German variety, if possible; local ones may vary in effectiveness. Jarsin, Perika, and Kira brands have been recommended as being effective. Take with a meal), Supplements, such as SAMe, 5-htp, L-phenylalanine: see: http://www.indepression.com/depression-natural-remedy.html (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets have old/inferior types, or mail order: Google: " … ; supplies"), Gotu Kola, etc. 80% of people in the Western world have low magnesium levels; which may cause depression.

Are you tired of these "natural" cures for depression and anxiety?

February 2, 2011 - 12:00 pm 4 Comments

I have this pet peeve. I am all for natural cures normally, but I am tired of people feeling that this is the number one way to go. For example, St. John’s wort…..people think that if you take it that it will be better because it has no side effects. Well it does, and it isn’t regulated anyways, so you have to be very careful. Also the science debates its merits! Anti-depressants and natural cures can work together, and I don’t think one is better than the other, it all depends on the person. What do you think?

I don’t pay attention to them personally but they concern me because there are probably a lot of people who need therapy & medication who aren’t getting it because of these types of ads.

What natural cures for a painful abscess tooth?

January 26, 2011 - 9:49 am 2 Comments

Ouch, when the gum and jaw are swollen and the pain is severe for days on end, and you don’t want a dentist to even touch you, what kitchen thing can you do?

You can only do things to deaden the pain. You need to see a dentist asap. People can die from the infection in an absessed tooth. If you wait too long, they might even have to remove part of your jawbone along with the infected tooth. This is super, super serious and nothing to mess around with.

The dentist won’t even try to pull this tooth until he has given you antibiotics to take for several days so the infection gets under control first. Make that appointment NOW!!! : O

Do natural allergy cures for cats really work?

January 22, 2011 - 6:45 pm 2 Comments

We got a cat a few months ago and my wife’s allergies have gotten progressively worse. She got an allergy test and she is definitely allergic to cats. She could get shots, but they may or may not work and will take some time to take affect. OTC allergy medicines don’t work. Perhaps she should try something like Zyrtec, but I was wondering if there was a natural ‘cure’ available that actually works. Please let me know what you’ve tried and the results.

Sometimes it is psychological and not real. Sometimes, it is real. Some good home filtering systems can help. If nothing else, try a room filter. If the filter doesn’t work, figure out which one you can get rid of cheapest: the cat or the wife.

Who knows some natural cures for ovarian cysts?

January 18, 2011 - 11:26 pm 2 Comments

I have ovarian cyst and its size is also not small, 5.2*5.1cm.
I just get married. I cant feel its existence at normal times. So I cant decide wether I need to remove the cyst or not. But I am planning to have a baby. So I do not want to do surgery. Is there anybody who knows some conservative treatments of ovarian cysts? Thanks a lot.

there is no way you can get rid of it without medical help, and it will most probably prevent you from getting pregnant anyway

Any natural cures or natural meds for Hypothyroidism?

January 11, 2011 - 7:52 am 3 Comments

I’m 18 and I have had Hypothyroidism for over 5 years. I have been on Synthroid since I’ve been diagnosed with it. It doesn’t seem to help with a lot of the issues plus I hate taking it. It’s such and inconvenience. Does anyone know anything natural that I could use in place of Synthroid?

Yes there are natural substitutes for thyroid medication. A lot of people find a good difference when they switch over from Synthroid to natural ones. The natural ones are: Armour Thyroid (also known as Naturethroid and Westhroid. They all basically have the same core ingredient, they just differ in the fillers and binders.) Like someone mentioned here, many pharmacies in US don’t have stock. You can find a lot more details about natural remedies (including Armour Thyroid) and potential places to buy them from the following site.

http://www.healthandcures.net/hypothyroidism-treatment.html

If you are successful at getting Armour or the other natural meds, don’t just abruptly change over from Synthroid to that. Ask your ND how to do it comfortably.

You could also try "Raw Thyroid" which is usually available in good stock at most places. There are other things like iodine supplements, yoga and organic virgin coconut oil all of which help a good deal.

You are just 18, all the best for a good active life! Hope the info (this answer and the website) helps.

i believe i have Cystitis, what natural cures are there?

January 7, 2011 - 12:27 pm 8 Comments

I dont want to have to take anti-biotics as i feel where natural cures are available theyll be more beneficial to me

Does anyone know of any natural cures available out there from health shops?

Please dont suggest cranberry juice as this doesnt seem to work and from ive read only prevents you from getting cystitis and isnt very helpful once youve got it!

Thanks!

You’re right about one thing, cranberry juice sometimes relieves the symptoms of cystitis but it cannot cure it.

Cystitis is invariably caused by a bacterial infection, 90% of which is caused by E.Coli, I’m afraid that there’s only one treatment that gets rid of E.Coli and that’s antibiotics, NO NATURAL REMEDIES KILL E. COLI

EDIT: Drinking bicarb or barley water doesn’t kill bacteria.
