Which Natural supplements work to lower blood pressure?

January 11, 2011 - 7:52 am 6 Comments

Is there any studies on natural products that help to lower blood pressure?

I used to follow these quite extensively – but in the last few years, all of the things I would have recommended – Large doses of CoQ10, fish oil, etc….haven’t held up to double blind studies…many of them are available through "google scholar"

So I’m going to suggest exercise, large reductions of fat in the diet and reduction of stress….

That will certainly do the trick – if you do it….that’s the hard part.

What are some good natural supplements to promote healthy hair growth/maintenance?

January 7, 2011 - 12:27 pm 1 Comment

I am just wondering what foods/supplements, etc. promote healthy hair. I have wondered this for a while, I know that flaxseed oil is good for that type of thing…but what else? And, while you’re at it, if you know of anything topical besides aloe vera of course, that help skin and hair, it would be nice to include it in your answer.
People! I don’t want links or "this site might help you" answers. What do YOU have to contribute??
lol no I don’t smoke….

I find that protein powder containing amino acids, specifically the L-cystine, made my hair healthy again. I use MLO Super High Protein Powder. I also stopped smoking because it made my hair brittle, dry and thin over a long period of time. Look up info on amino acids and if you smoke, look up the effects of smoking tobacco on the hair.

What are some natural supplements you can take for anxiety/depression? Tried and true?

January 1, 2011 - 1:59 am 9 Comments

I’ve done some e-searching but i’m skeptical to try a few different ones as i’m a broke college student. I cannot afford health insurance and I do not qualify for any government programs so this is my last hope. Has anybody tried buying herbal supplements, and if so, did any of them have any sort of significance?

Ask yourself: "Why do I feel depressed, and when did I first start to feel this way: can I associate this with any recent change in my life?" (if so, it is probably reactive [situational] depression: counselling, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy may be indicated, but most of life’s adverse situations are resolved within 16 weeks, yet the medical criteria for depression, and the prescription of antidepressants is only 2 weeks!). Or, was it a more gradual thing, with no apparent cause? (a nutritional deficiency, hypothyroidism, environmental toxicity, or reactions to some medications, etc., becomes more likely as the cause). Antidepressants work quicker than the following; 2 – 6 weeks, but you may have to adjust dosage, or types. St. John’s wort helps most people; tolerance doesn’t develop, and the few side effects don’t occur often, and even then are normally not severe (neither should be relied on as a sole treatment).

It doesn’t cause sleeping problems, or weight change, but usually takes at least 2, and generally 4 – 6 weeks to become effective, but can work quicker than antidepressants, sometimes. A recent, independent German double blind study showed it to be as effective as a commonly prescribed antidepressant, in cases of major depression, with far fewer side effects, and those were generally better tolerated, with a lower rate of discontinuation. Unlike antidepressants, where sexual dysfunction is a common side effect, it happens much more rarely with St. John’s wort (I have noticed no effect in this area). A multidimensional approach to treating depression without medication follows. All except for no. (7.) are safe to use with medication, but not St. John’s wort, because of interactions, and it’s sensible to check out anything else first with your doctor.

(1.) Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or grapefruit, or their FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it. In the winter months, if not getting sufficient daily exposure to strong light, see http://www.mercola.com/ SEARCHBAR: enter: "vitamin D3", & Go to a doctor and ask for a 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D, blood test. When you get the results, don’t follow the typical “normal” reference range, as these are too low. The OPTIMAL value that you’re looking for is 45-52 ng/ml (115-128 nmol/l)". The company which tests your levels has to be one of those using the correct form of test, and this topic is addressed via the searchbar at mercola.com – "vitamin D3; testing". Also take a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin; a deficiency in vitamin B9 (folic acid, or folate) is known to cause depression. Around 30% – 40% of depressed people have low vitamin B12 levels. Depressed females using the contraceptive pill may benefit from vitamin B6 supplements.

(2.) Work up slowly to at least 20 minutes minutes of exercise, daily, or 30 – 60 mns, 5 times weekly. Too much exercise can cause stress, which isn’t wanted when dealing with depression. (3.) Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows little time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain). (4.) Use daily, a relaxation method* and/or yoga*, and/or Tai Chi*.(5.) Initially, at least, some form of psychotherapy or counselling; later, perhaps either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavio(u)ral Therapy for, say, 6 months. (6.) Maintain a mood chart, and daily activities schedule**. (7.) As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St. John’s wort, (get a German variety, if possible; local ones may vary in effectiveness. Perika, and Kira brands have been recommended as being effective. Take with a meal) or supplements, such as SAMe, or Inositol (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets, or mail order: view section 55).

Natural Supplements to lower mens libido?

December 28, 2010 - 2:33 pm 2 Comments

I was wondering what natural supplements can lower a man’s sex drive.
Please serious answers only, no "why would you want to do that" answers please.

I heard maybe chasteberry, but then I read it was only an old wives tale.

Anyone know, it would help alot thanks.

chasteberry does. also known as vitex.
it was used by monks centuries ago to lower their sex drive to stay celibate.
i would trust the monks, any herb that has been used for thousands of years probably works.

What feed supplements/natural treatments are good for spooky/nervous horses?

December 25, 2010 - 3:07 pm 7 Comments

I have a pony who is very spooky and nervous last summer i used a supplement in his feeds which really helped him stay calm. But which brand would you say was best? And also do you know of any other natural treatments that my help my pony? Thanks

I’m not sure about supplements, but sacking him out would REALLY help.

Basically, get a bunch of scary objects (tarps, plastic bags, empty water bottles, ropes, etc), and scare him with them. You have to do it slowly, though, or he’ll come out worse off than he was. Take him in a round pen or arena with a halter and a lead rope on. Bring an object closer and closer to him, until he gets scared. Then stop. Wait for him to calm down, and bring it closer. When he gets scared again, stop. And so on. Eventually you should be able to rub the objects all over his body, toss the tarp over his back, and throw the ropes all over him. Just be sure not to rush him or he’ll just be even more scared than he was before you started. Also, make sure you let him walk or jump away if he wants to. If he tries to get away, just stop coming closer until he holds still again. If you try to make him stand still, you’ll just scare him more.

Here’s a good article on it:

My gelding was abused before I got him, and he was afraid of EVERYTHING. I sack him out every once in a while…. every few months or so, and it works really well.

What are some effective, natural supplements that can help with weight loss?

December 19, 2010 - 5:11 pm 6 Comments

I dont have too much of a weight problem, but I noticed that this medication that I been on for the past few months, contributed to weight gain. It has become bothersome and am wondering if there are any effective supplements out on the market which could help counteract the weight gain. Any input would be appreciate, thank you.

Drugs like Fen-Phen and Phentermine are Drugs and are certainly not natural. These drugs and others like them have been found to have serious side effects.

Some natural remedies that can aid in weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight are chili peppers. They help increase metabolism naturally and help to digest food which in turn allows you to receive more nutrition.

When you wake in the morning, drink a cold glass of water. The sudden cold water will lower your body temperature just enough that the body will raise metabolism to get the body temp back to normal.

Try eating 4 or 5 smaller meals instead of 2 big ones. This will keep your metabolism stoked so you burn more calories for energy rather then the body storing them as fat for later use.

Ok… 3 simple but effective all natural ways to loose excess weight and maintain a healthy body weight. Hope it helps.
