New Tinnitus Treatment
These four new treatments for tinnitus show considerable promise, but as we’ve seen before, tinnitus is a symptom, not really a disease in itself. This is the main stumbling block to discovering an actual cure. Equally, it’s difficult to diagnose, due to the fact that it can take the form of so the majority of other conditions. So better at the moment, a real and lasting cure for the condition eludes us. However, there are treatments for it that are showing promise, so let’s have a look at these. The first one is named Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, or TRT. Actually, this one isn’t brand new. It’s been around for a while, but does show that it can help. The idea behind it is to re-train the ear and brain of the patient. New Tinnitus Treatment
It does this using a sound generator with a specific course of counseling by specially trained counselors. The second and third types of treatment are both very new. The second one involves sending tiny electrical charges to the auditory nerve. It’s known as Electrical Nerve Stimulation. However, this is normally used only on people with severe forms of tinnitus, and/or conditions that have stubbornly refused to show any signs of improvement with other treatments. This does show promise and the interesting part about this is that in the future, surgically implanted nerve stimulation devices may very well be used. Even now, scientists are experimenting on this implant method. Obviously, it will only be used if or when there’s a considerable improvement with the method as it is. As I’ve pointed out, while it is proving quite successful over the short term, it must do a lot more than that before surgeons start any invasive procedures like implants. New Tinnitus Treatment
The third treatment is Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. This involves a coil of copper wire, which is encased in plastic, held above the patient’s head and current applied. This stimulation occurs several times a second. Some patients experience a clicking noise, (real, not imaginary), and others feel discomfort. The reason for this is that the scalp muscles are made to involuntarily tighten up. New Tinnitus Treatment
Nevertheless, while still very experimental, good results have been experienced. The fourth treatment we’ll take a look at is named Hyperbolic Oxygen Therapy. Like TRT, the first treatment we looked at, this isn’t new, but has been used for quite a long time in various ways. Scientists keep refining it, and at the moment it takes the form of placing the patient in a chamber with oxygen at slightly more than one atmosphere of pressure. New Tinnitus Treatment
This is thought to increase the oxygen to the ear and brain, since oxygen starvation is thought to be one of the causes of tinnitus. This definitely seems to be helping some people, but again, in its present form, is experimental. Suffering from Ringing Ears and Tinnitus?
