Can someone suggest natural cures for diabetes?
I am tired of taking medications for years for my diabetes. As I grow older I want to reduce medication and switchover to natural cures if possible.
Diabetes is not reversible. Please don’t discontinue any medication without discussing it with your doctor, and PLEASE don’t take advice from people who know so little about diabetes that they refer you to bastions of quackery like Mercola and Natural News.
You don’t give your age, and you don’t say whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, or whether it’s insulin you are taking.
But in another question you talk about your love of junk food and how you don’t understand how it can be bad for you.
Type 2 diabetes can often be controlled by diet alone; mine is. And junk food has no part in a diet for controlling type 2 diabetes. At my 6 monthly check ups, my average glucose level for the previous 3 months is regularly around 5.2; I don’t know where you live or how that translates, but it’s very good control. But I know that however controlled it is, however low I keep my blood glucose levels – I’ll still always be diabetic.
There are no ‘natural cures’ for diabetes. It’s a bugger; I wish I wasn’t diabetic too, but it’s with me for life. It is for you too. I manage to keep on the straight and narrow by asking myself which I want more, chocolate or my feet? Junk food or my eyesight? No contest. If I had to take medication for diabetes my attitude would be the same.
Please don’t run the risk of uncontrolled diabetes and the dire consequences that can have by abandoning your meds and going for any of the dubious (at best) ‘cures’ that may be recommended here.

Do not stop your medicine without getting the okay from your doctor. You can die.
That said, many patients who are diabetic as a result of obesity "cure" diabetes with weight loss. It is a common result of gastric bypass surgery.

There are many natural cures which have been found to be very effective. Magnesium is found in seeds, nuts, legumes and green leafy vegetables and is very good for diabetes. Ginseng is very effective in controlling diabetes. So are cinnamon and aloe vera. I have been a diabetic for years and have tried different natural cures all of which have been of great help in controlling my blood sugar.

cinnamon capsules available at Walmart can help lower blood sugar. Walking will help. If you have Type 2 diabetes and follow a good diet and exercise….keep track of your sugars…most people can get off medication. You need to be followed by a doctor to be sure.

Do you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes? The first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes is actually diet, weight reduction and exercise. However, if this fails to reduce blood glucose levels, and your sugar levels remain high, medication (metformin, etc) is needed. With type 1 diabetes, there is no alternative, you need to have insulin.
Altmed has nothing to offer, ignore that misguided user above, he is a dangerous charlatan of the worst kind offering incorrect medical advice and false hope on the Internet (twice in one hour).
As Lo_mcg has correctly stated, the concern here is that people may actually stop taking their medication that controls your blood sugar which can actually put you at risk of other serious health problems and even be fatal.
No one likes to have chonic life long illnesses, I hate having asthma, but you just have to make the best of what you have. If you stop your medication, your quality of life will take a plummet and you will be at risk from heart problems (e.g. hardening of the arteries, angina, cardiovascular events and poor circulation). Over time you could also develop kidney problems, issues with your sight, foot problems, nerve damage and impotence if you are male.
Think very carefully.

My legs hurt terribly everyday of my life, and prevent me from doing so many things I want to do.
If all I had to do was take a handful of prescription medication everyday to move on with my life, I would be grateful and do it in a heartbeat.

Hi Chunnu,
I understand the frustration… I have many friends with diabetes who are in the same position. It requires a lot of discipline to keep your sugar levels controlled. Lo-mcg is right, whatever you do, do not stop your medications, only the doctor can stop your medications.
I used to be very skeptical of alternative medicines.
However, I personally have seen friends use natural cures with some degree of success. Nevertheless, as I said, when the control gets better, ask the doctor if the medications can be titrated down.
Whilst natural cures like herbal medicines may have some merits, I prefer to look at energy healing as you do not need to ingest anything, there is less fear of interactions and safety. WHO had a report in year 2003 of possible benefits of acupuncture, Diabetes is one of the conditions. I know many people may not be so keen to have needles stuck to them. But the point is that harmonizing the energy balance in our body can play a significant role in controlling diabetes.
Lets face it, even if you don’t cure it, but your sugar levels are better controlled with minimal effort… that’s already freedom.
